Our Story

PJM

Back in the early 1900’s, Percy James MacKellow, an adveturous young Englishman travelled to Australia with his new wife, Hetty. After a short stint in outback Queensland, the two moved to Tenterfield, a small rural community in New South Wales and opened a bike shop on the main street.

Percy was a talented musician and took on the position of bandmaster of the local brass band. He also became known as the local bricklayer, motor engineer, gunsmith and umbrella repairman. He was however most recognised for his bike building prowess, and the PJM brand of pushbike was born with his bikes becoming highly sort after in the northern New South Wales region.

Percy and Hetty raised a son, Jack, who became a champion bike racer and held Australian road race records for many years. Jack would only race on PJM cycles or the famous Speedwell bikes.

Percy’s love of motorcycles prompted an expansion of the PJM business, and he imported a fleet of bikes and sidecars to sell alongside his pushbikes. He specialised in the sales, service and repairs of Harley Davidson, Triumph, Royal Enfield, BSA and Douglas.

In 1930 the PJM cycle store was tragically destroyed by fire, putting an end (it seemed) to the PJM brand. In true Aussie spirit, and more than 85 years later, Cody Jurd - the great grandson of Percy James - revived the family legacy and opened the second PJM workshop in 2016 in Redfern, Sydney.

To honour the memory of both great grandfather and grandfather, the PJM brand has been reborn as Percy Jack Motorcycles… and a family tradition lives on.

From humble beginnings, Percy Jack Motorcycles has transformed into a trusted name in the motorcycle industry.

Having outgrown its initial Redfern location, and then its second home in St Peters being developed into apartments, Percy Jack Motorcycles relocated a third time in 2018 to a large workshop on the main road in St Peters, Sydney. ,

Sadly, tragedy struck the PJM brand a second time in May 2020 when a large factory fire destroyed the workshop in St Peters. But true to form the team picked themselves up, relocated once more to Marrickville, and are coming back stronger than ever.
